The company itself was founded on May 29, 1888, by William Henry Belk, who had gained twelve years of retail experience as a store clerk prior to that. He opened his first store in the small farming town of Monroe, North Carolina, at the young age of twenty-six. The only starting revenue and assets William was said to have were $750.00 in savings, a $500.00 loan, and $3000.00 worth of consignment merchandise. The original establishment was called the New York Racket, a name which was unusual and had the goal of drawing attention and customers to the store. William later convinced his brother, Dr. John M. Belk, to retire from medicine and come onboard as his partner in the company. This team of siblings then grew Belk into one of the largest retail chains in the Carolinas and Southern United States. The current CEO of the Belk Corporatin is Thomas (Tim) Belk, Jr. H.W. McKay Belk is the president and chief merchandising officer and John R. Belk is president and chief operating officer. They are the grand-children of William H. Belk, the original founder of the stores.
