When North Carolina’s Cabarrus County was first created in the 1700s, a disagreement erupted over the location of the county seat. The area was populated by German as well as Scots-Irish settlements, and they both wanted to claim ownership of the new county. As a compromise, they agreed to establish the county seat on a 26-acre lot on neutral grounds. The area was named Concord, and you can still see remnants of the neighborhood’s historical roots at the Cannon House and the Old Courthouse Theater on Spring Street.
Concord Today
Concord is now a thriving community where many business and medical professionals live alongside families of all sizes. The community has many public parks like the Concord Greenway and offers direct access to prestigious medical facilities like the Carolina’s Medical Center Northeast, Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital and Novant Health. Residents are within a reasonable drive of employers in Charlotte, but there are also many jobs in Concord through the local government, Cabarrus County Schools, Kannapolis County Schools and Hendrick Motorsports.
Living in Concord
The median household income in Concord is slightly higher than the state average, and average home prices typically stay well above $200,000. This is reflective of the cozy communities throughout the area which offer large single-family homes surrounded by highly-ranked schools. This includes quality public schools which offer some unique class options and a variety of private schools accepting students from preschool through high school.
Concord vs. Charlotte
Concord is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Charlotte’s center city, and it has many safe residential communities that attract commuters seeking refuge from the big city. The overall cost of living is approximately 17 percent higher than that of Charlotte, and that is partly reflective of higher average home and utility prices. This is common for suburban communities that offer a more relaxed living environment outside of a larger city.
While younger residents often choose to live in Charlotte because they want to remain close to the many community activities offered in the city as well as the nightlife, many families choose to live in Concord because the public school system is rated higher and the crime rates are lower in most residential areas. Residents also appreciate that they still have access to Carolina Mall, Concord Mills as well as many restaurants and entertainment venues without leaving Concord.
