Even though the pandemic makes it seem like life is on hold, there are a surprising number of new projects coming to the Charlotte area. There are projects of all types, apartments, townhomes, condominiums, and commercial projects as well. This is a great time for developers to get all of the plans, zoning, and paperwork in order.

The first development we want to highlight is in the rapidly growing Gold District. This area is great because of its proximity to Uptown. The project will be seven stories tall and will consist of 259 apartments. Construction will begin this summer with an expected completion in 2022.

A second project called Broadstone Highland Creek will consist of 260 units and seven townhouses. There will also be 8,000 square feet of commercial space. Amenities will include a pool, clubroom, fitness center, and dog park. This project will be in the Highland Creek area, near the Shoppes at Highland Creek. This project is brought to you by Alliance Residential Co. The apartments will have between one and three bedrooms and will average 991 square feet in size. No details on the townhomes are available yet. The project is expected to start construction later this year with units available early in 2022.

Affordable housing will soon be coming to the site of the YWCA Central Carolinas on Park Road. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership is working on this project which is expected to deliver up to 104 residential units. The 18 month construction timeline should start next spring so units should be available in 2023.

Another project coming soon would bring 220 age-restricted units to Morehead Street southeast of Euclid Avenue. The project is being developed by Bridgewood Property Co. They are still trying to finalize the project to make sure there is minimal traffic impact. More details should be available soon.

Many projects are in the beginning phases of development and need zoning changes approved. Some recently approved projects include a 200 residential unit development in University City. Another is a 79 townhome and 15,000 square foot commercial project at the intersection of Prosperity Church and Old Ridge Roads. Another project in development is an “upscale stacked flat” project on the former site of the Peculiar Rabbit. This one could be condos or apartments, it has not been decided yet.

Probably our favorite project coming soon is a bar and social game club called Slingshot coming to South End. This one is similar to Pins, where you have lots of games like Skee-Ball, but it supersizes the game to make it more fun. They also have a combination of basketball and connect four which sounds interesting as well. Slingshot will have self-pour taps for beer as well as a full menu where you order from a tablet. They are projecting to open in late August as long as conditions allow us to move to Phase 3 of Covid restrictions.

These are just some of the projects we are excited about right now. They were all approved at the City Council meeting last month (except for Slingshot) and we will be following them to see how they progress in the coming months.
