Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Charlotte Douglas International Airport enables travelers to reach over 140 cities throughout the world. Ten major airlines and a number of regional carriers serve this award-winning public facility. More than 600 airplanes use its runways each day. The terminal features a variety of restaurants, stores, parking garages and rental agencies.

Transportation

This airport offers eight parking areas with over 26,000 spaces. It provides long-term parking discounts and a free “cellphone lot” for visitors who need to pick up passengers. The CDIA plans to open an hourly parking area in late 2014. Customers may rent cars from eight major chains, including Budget, Hertz and Avis.

Charlotte Area Transit System buses regularly make stops at the airport. Taxi, van, limousine and shuttle services are also available. As of July 2013, the city’s light rail system does not have a station at the CDIA. Some lodging establishments dispatch courtesy vehicles to the airport. They provide a convenient way to reach local hotels.

Lodging Options

Travelers can find three hotels within 1.5 miles of the airport. They are all located on Little Rock Road. One option is the 109-room Hampton Inn & Suites; it features fitness equipment, a business center and an indoor swimming pool. The price of a room includes a hot or cold breakfast.

The business-oriented Courtyard Hotel has some of the same amenities, including an indoor pool and gym. Its cafe provides a continental or buffet breakfast for an extra fee. Nearby restaurants can deliver other meals to the guest rooms. Each unit has two phone lines, an ironing board and a coffee maker.

Airline passengers may also choose to stay at the four-story Holiday Inn. It offers relatively inexpensive rooms and suites. An outdoor pool remains open during the warm months. Other amenities include a lounge, restaurant, business center, laundromat and conference facilities. All three hotels provide free Internet access.

Airport History

The Works Progress Administration provided funds that helped the city of Charlotte construct a municipal airfield in 1935. Thirteen years later, the state’s Air National Guard established a base at the airport. The CDIA eventually grew to become one of the world’s largest airports; it currently serves over 30 million travelers every year.
