Novant Health Inc. will hire 150 employees in Fort Mill, SC by the end of March as part of an electronic medical records project.

The Winston-Salem based health care system is looking to hire workers with backgrounds in information technology, clinical services and business for the initiative, called Dimensions.

Novant is investing about $500 million in the project, which will occupy existing company space off I-77, says Sheila Moore, program director.

She notes the number of jobs could grow to about 300, including employees and consultants, by the end of 2013.

The effort will create systemwide access to patient records at all 13 Novant hospitals in the Carolinas and Virginia and its physicians group, which has more than 360clinic locations, Moore says.

The initiative should help prevent medication errors and reduce duplicate testing, Moore says. It also will improve patient access to records as well as scheduling for appointments and tests, she adds.

“It really is patient centered and quality focused,” Moore says. “It is about safety.”

Electronic-medical records are being rolled out through Novant’s physician practices.

Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte will be the first acute care facility to use the technology, with implementation slated for the fourth quarter of 2013.

Novant anticipates electronic-medical records will be available systemwide by the fourth quarter of 2015.
